Introduction to die-cutting and embossing using the Xcut Xpress
е:
In this video I give you a short introduction to setting up the Xcut Xpress machine and using it for embossing and die-cutting. I use an Xcut polka hearts embossing folder and an Xcut intricate filigree heart die to show you the basics of each technique.
The main advantages to the Xpress are that it can take A4 size dies and embossing folders, and that you don’t need to use different combinations of plates or shims for different dies and folders – you just turn the dial on the top to set the height of the rollers.
You’ll notice that my top cutting plate is a bit warped and bent as I have used the machine so many times but this is common with all manual die cutting machines and it still works perfectly well. The plates can be replaced when they become really worn.
Using the thin metal Xcut dies (basic shapes), the machine cuts paper/card (80–216gsm), vellum (120gsm), corrugated card, mirror board, EVA foam (2mm), felt (2mm), faux leather, thin cotton fabric, adhesive paper (glitter, foil), adhesive fabric paper, shrink plastic, canvas, soft lining, faux denim, aluminium foil, acetate and jute/hessian. The instructions that come with the machine tell you what to set the dial to for each one, how many times to run it through, and which materials require the metal shim to be used with them (the fabrics and thicker materials). They also give instructions for all different types of dies (foam backed, thick foam backed) and embossing folders.
Have fun, and let me know if you have any questions!
