Life in Yakutia / жизнь в Якутии
е:
The cold months of winter are already behind us, nonetheless at nights it reaches -40C. For the first time in two months, Ellei began to go outside for walks.
One of the more interesting events in 2015 was my trip to my relatives in the Ust-Aldansky region. I was there for three days, talking with people about life, God, and the Bible.
My father told me that he comes from the Ust-Aldansky region and that we have many relatives there. At the end of January I was able to visit there for the first time. Before this for a whole week, I looked for transportation that could bring me to this remote place (there are no buses). Having arrived in the village of Kurbuhach, I asked people, «where do my grandmother’s relatives live?» Probably to you this is funny. My grandmother had 21 brothers and sisters. In this region every tenth person is my relative! Three days they led me from one house to another, from one village to another. From morning to evening they fed me only meat, milk, and fish (this is their daily diet). On the first day according to an old Yakut tradition in honor of my arrival in the land of my ancestors, they decided to build a fire and to worship the spirits of the fire and the earth to receive a blessing. Then I asked, «why do our people worship the spirits, but God, the Creator of the sun, fire, and the earth, has been forgotten?» From this moment our discussion about the Creator continued all of three days. On the third day they even invited me to a local school in order to speak with the children and the teachers about God and the Bible. It is too bad that in this region there is not one church. I was not even able to give them any kind of Christian literature in Yakut, because there was nothing left — more needs to be printed. The people there understand Russian very poorly.
