Making a Viking longboat — Primary school year 6 History project
е:
Took 4 weekends and several afternoons/evenings to accomplish this project. Needed constant guidance, supervision and help — especially with the «ropes». I designed and drew the templates but he was able to draw and cut the parts of the boat — even the thicker cardboards.
We used a cheap, brand new pillowcase for the sail, made stripes with masking tape and painted with normal poster-paint using a sponge. Used the hot glue to fold the edges of the sail. We folded twice, and the second time glued a thin wire in (like a frame) to keep the shape of the sail (looks like it`s blown by the wind).
We used skewer sticks for the oars and wooden dowel Ø 9mm for the mast and Ø 6mm for the yard.
Used thin string and thread for the ropes and secured the shields with paper fasteners. The rest is cardboard box.
Quick list of materials:
— cardboard boxes (two different thickness)
— wooden dowel (Ø 6mm and Ø 9mm)
— skewer sticks
— thin string and thread
— poster paint
— paper fasteners
— pillowcase
— thin wire
— hot glue-gun
— masking tape
— and several obvious tools (such as rulers, scissors, trimming knife etc.)
After a lot of research, the basic idea was coming from these two youtube videos:
